A Simple Method for Comparing Fuzzy Numbers

The methods of fuzzy decision-making use the comparison of fuzzy numbers or sets to choose among alternatives. The linear ordering of real numbers does not extend to fuzzy numbers and fuzzy numbers can only be partially ordered and hence they cannot be compared. However, when fuzzy numbers are used in practical applications their comparison becomes necessary. Several methods of comparing fuzzy numbers have been proposed in literature. With few exceptions, they suffer from three major drawbacks: they are often insensitive to small differences, they occasionally result in choices inconsistent with intuition, and they often have to be performed in multiple steps that result in multiple indices that are occasionally conflicting. In this paper we present a consistent fuzzy number comparison method based on the fuzzy number representation in Fuzzy Arithmetic. We also describe a variant based on the fuzzy number division in comparison used in PCM method. The method is compared with previously proposed methods and its possible advantages are emphasized. The method was implemented in a Java applet that is available online along with documentation and source code.
